This image is a full solar mosaic assembled by combining almost 100k individual photos of the Sun. The resulting view was then processed to reveal the layers of intricate details within the chromosphere.
The appearance of the sprawling solar corona and star field are artistic elements of this composition. An actual photograph of the 2017 total solar eclipse was adjusted to align the main features. It was then subtly layered against a backdrop of more distant stars. A blend of art and science, the result gives the impression of a scene that is quite literally impossible to photograph with today’s technology!
